The early signs that are easy to miss, the main symptoms doctors look for, and when to get checked.
Early signs
Parkinson's starts slowly, and the first signs are often put down to age or stress. Some appear years before the diagnosis.

Main symptoms
A diagnosis is based on slowness of movement (bradykinesia) together with tremor at rest, stiffness (rigidity), or both. Balance problems usually come later.
Symptoms typically begin on one side of the body and stay worse on that side. Parkinson's also has non-motor symptoms, such as low mood, sleep problems and dizziness, which are covered in their own guide.
FAQs
No. The most common tremor, essential tremor, happens when the hands are being used rather than at rest. Only a doctor can tell the difference reliably.
